Asari Dokubo accuses Yoruba of betrayal, seeks new alliance with the North

Former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, has publicly criticized the Yoruba community, accusing them of betraying the Ijaw and Niger Delta people despite their support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections.
His statements, which surfaced in a widely circulated video, have ignited heated reactions and discussions.
In the video, Dokubo expressed his disappointment and regret, admitting that he once questioned the decisions of past Ijaw leaders like former Governor Melford Okilo to align politically with the northern region. However, reflecting on recent events, he apologized to his predecessors, acknowledging that their decision to strengthen ties with the North was justified.
“I apologize to our fathers, Melford Okilo and Prieye. They were not wrong to align with the North. From now on, we’ll strengthen ties with the North,” Dokubo said, pledging a renewed commitment to fortifying the relationship with the North.
In his address to the Ijaw people, Dokubo condemned the Yoruba for allegedly disregarding the efforts and sacrifices made by the Niger Delta community during the election. “We risked our lives, voted, and did everything, and this is what we get? The Yoruba people do not value the Ijaw contribution. They betray us!” he lamented, referring to the region’s support for Tinubu.

Dokubo’s grievances are fueled by President Tinubu’s recent move to scrap the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, a decision that has been perceived by many in the region as a disregard for their interests. The President’s decision was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who announced the dissolution of the Niger Delta Ministry alongside the Ministry of Sports Development.
In response to the developments, Dokubo announced plans to rally for a lasting alliance with the northern region, hinting at a potential shift in the political dynamics between the Niger Delta and the Yoruba communities.
