The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the murder of one of its operatives, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, while performing his official duties in Awka, Anambra State.
In a statement issued by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the Commission described the killing of Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC (ASE II) Salisu on January 17, 2025, as a heinous crime and condemned the “irresponsible narratives” circulating on social media regarding the tragic incident.
“The EFCC expresses grief over the loss of a gallant officer killed in cold blood while on legitimate duty. It is disturbing to see some commentators attempting to rationalize a murderous act. There is no justification for such brutality,” the statement read.
According to the EFCC, Salisu was part of a team executing a well-documented operation at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka, targeting suspected internet fraudsters. The operation, coordinated with the Anambra State Police Command, initially led to the arrest of 37 suspects before it took a deadly turn.
The statement detailed that Ikechukwu, using a CCTV camera to monitor the officers, refused to open his door despite their identification. He allegedly opened fire, killing Salisu and injuring another officer. A subsequent search of Ikechukwu’s apartment revealed laptops, iPads, and other devices linked to fraudulent activities.
The Commission confirmed Ikechukwu’s involvement in coding schemes and questionable online medical supplies. While the suspect remains in police custody for murder, the EFCC vowed to ensure his prosecution.
The EFCC also warned that internet fraudsters, often dismissed as mere “Yahoo boys,” have become increasingly dangerous, engaging in armed violence, kidnapping, and ritual killings. The agency reiterated its resolve to combat internet crime and corruption, warning that any future attacks on its personnel would be met with decisive legal action.
“While mourning Salisu’s death, the EFCC appreciates the support and condolences from sister agencies and well-meaning Nigerians. This loss strengthens our commitment to fighting fraud and corruption with renewed vigor,” the statement concluded.
