Tariff hike: FCCPC gives condition to telecom service providers

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern directive to telecommunications service providers, insisting on significant service quality improvements following the recent 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Acknowledging the economic challenges facing telecom operators, FCCPC emphasized that Nigerian consumers must receive better value for the higher costs they will now bear.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, FCCPC CEO Tunji Bello reiterated the Commission’s commitment to protecting consumer interests while ensuring fair practices within the industry.
“The FCCPC recognizes the mounting pressure faced by the NCC over the years to approve tariff adjustments due to rising operational costs, which have become even more severe recently. However, consumer interests remain our priority,” the statement read.
FCCPC commended the NCC for adopting a measured approach by approving a 50% tariff increase instead of the over 100% proposed by operators. It also praised the regulatory body for linking the adjustment to improvements in service quality and implementing measures to ease the burden on consumers.
“The NCC’s decision demonstrates a thoughtful effort to balance industry sustainability with consumer protection,” FCCPC stated.
The Commission emphasized that all tariffs must now be transparent, straightforward, and free from hidden charges. Telecom operators are required to clearly disclose all plan details upfront, including costs, validity periods, and specific benefits.
FCCPC further demanded that pressing issues such as network congestion, dropped calls, inconsistent internet speeds, unusual data depletion, and poor customer service be addressed urgently.
“It is non-negotiable that telecom operators must prioritize visible and measurable improvements in network reliability, speed, accessibility, and customer service as part of any tariff adjustment,” the Commission said.
Additionally, FCCPC insisted that telecom providers communicate the rationale for the tariff increase transparently. Consumers must be fully informed about the nature of the changes, their expected benefits, and how they align with efforts to improve infrastructure and service delivery.
