Amorim backs Onana despite poor performance

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has spoken out about goalkeeper Andre Onana’s performances, acknowledging both the Cameroonian’s crucial saves and occasional mistakes.
Despite a few high-profile errors, Andre Onana has largely been a standout player, leading the Premier League in clean sheets by December 2024. In a recent interview, Amorim discussed the goalkeeper’s mixed form, explaining that while the goalkeeper has made some key saves, he has also had moments of inconsistency.
Amorim was quick to defend his player, saying, “Onana did some great saves that saved our team, and sometimes he has some problems – but that is normal.” He further stressed that such inconsistencies are not unique to Onana, pointing out that many of the team’s players face similar issues.
“If you look at our team, you can find a lot of players with that issue,” he added. The coach’s comments reflect his approach to backing the 28-year-old through the ups and downs, focusing on preparing the goalkeeper for future improvements rather than dwelling on mistakes.
The United boss remains committed to supporting his goalkeeper as part of a broader plan to enhance the team’s overall performance.
While the Cameroonian’s future at Old Trafford has come under some scrutiny, Amorim’s public backing provides reassurance. However, there have been ongoing discussions about potentially signing a new goalkeeper during the upcoming transfer window, as the club continues to evaluate its long-term options between the posts.
For now, Amorim’s focus remains on fostering Onana’s growth, with the ultimate goal of solidifying his position as a key figure in United’s defence moving forward.
