UNIABUJA wins Global Geoscience Education award

The University of Abuja’s Department of Geology and Mining has achieved a major milestone by winning the prestigious Geologize Global Training Award, emerging as the top institution among 55 universities worldwide.
The award recognizes the university’s commitment to transforming geoscience education, bridging the academia-industry divide, and driving innovation in Earth sciences.
Geologize CEO and Founder, Haydon Mort, praised the university for its groundbreaking efforts, stating:
“One institution stood out—not just for what they aspire to do, but for what they are already doing to transform geoscience education in their country. The University of Abuja is tackling declining student interest, bridging the academia-industry gap, and actively trying new approaches to public outreach.”
The University of Abuja secured this global recognition due to three key factors:
Revitalizing Geoscience Education
With a decline in student enrollment in Earth sciences across Nigeria, the university is redesigning its curriculum to make geoscience education more practical, engaging, and career-focused.
Strengthening Academia-Industry Collaboration
Recognizing the challenges of graduate employability, the institution is working closely with industry partners to equip students with real-world communication skills. This initiative aims to prepare graduates to effectively engage policymakers, communities, and stakeholders.
Introducing Innovation in Geoscience Education
Under the leadership of Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Isyaku, Head of the Department, the University of Abuja has become the first institution in Nigeria to introduce a geodiversity and geoheritage course. This pioneering move reinforces the university’s position as a leader in Earth sciences education.
With approximately 160 students and faculty members set to benefit from Geologize’s specialized training, the partnership is expected to elevate geoscience education and outreach in Nigeria.
Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Isyaku expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating:
“This award affirms our commitment to making geoscience education in Nigeria globally competitive. The University of Abuja is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation, and we look forward to leveraging this opportunity to empower our students and faculty.”
Geologize, a globally recognized leader in geoscience communication training, will provide the University of Abuja with exclusive access to world-class educational resources. This achievement marks a historic milestone, positioning Nigeria as a key player in advancing Earth sciences education, research, and industry collaboration.
