Dybala to miss remainder of the season

AS Roma confirmed that Paulo Dybala is set to undergo surgery on his tendon after it was deemed the best solution to ensure an optimal recovery. As a result, the Argentine is set to miss the remainder of the season for the ‘Giallorossi’.
Initial reports informed that the 31-year-old was set to be sidelined for at least a month after suffering a tendon injury in his left thigh last week against Cagliari. But following Roma’s announcement that he will undergo surgery, Paulo Dybala’s season is over.
“Paulo Dybala will undergo surgery in the coming days following an injury to his left semitendinosus tendon. The player and the club have mutually agreed that this is the best course of action for an optimal recovery. Wishing Paulo a speedy recovery,” reads a statement from the Italian club.
Roma did not disclose for how long Dybala would be sidelined but with only nine matches left in Serie A, he is almost certain not to play again until next season. His absence will be a big blow to Roma who, since Claudio Ranieri’s return as coach in November, have been in rampant form.
The ‘Giallorossi’ are four points behind fourth-place Bologna after winning their last six fixtures in the Italian top flight, dropping just six points in 13 matches since last losing a league game, at Como before Christmas. They have gone from being relegation candidates to battling for the European spots.
Dybala counts 8 goals and 4 assists from 2122 minutes across 36 matches in all competition this term, and his dynamic play would have been key to Roma’s late bid for Champions League football. ‘La Joya’ sent a message to fans via his social media platforms following the news.
He wrote: “Dear friends, first of all, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love you always show me. After having seen the medical results and evaluated different solutions, I have decided to undergo this surgery now to return as soon as possible.
“Even though I will be temporarily away from the pitch, I will continue to support my teammates at Roma in this crucial stage of the league, and those in the national team, whom I will continue to keep up with as an extra supporter during these qualifying matches.
“I will be back soon and see you on the pitch. Forza Roma and Vamos Argentina.”
