FG reopens Lagos bridge amid traffic chaos

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, reversing its planned two-month closure for maintenance.
The decision comes in response to severe traffic congestion and widespread public outcry following the bridge’s initial shutdown earlier this week.
The bridge, which connects key areas in Victoria Island, was slated for repairs from April 1 to the end of May 2025. However, its abrupt closure triggered massive gridlock, paralyzing movement along major routes such as Ahmadu Bello Way, Adeola Odeku, and the Marina-bound corridor. Commuters faced extended travel times, with traffic stretching from Lekki to the mainland via Falomo Bridge.
Lagos State’s Federal Controller of Works, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, had initially justified the closure as necessary for structural maintenance. However, in light of the overwhelming disruptions, the Federal Ministry of Works announced that the repair schedule would be revisited to minimize public inconvenience.
Kesha expressed regret over the distress caused by the closure and reassured residents that alternative arrangements would be made to ensure essential maintenance is carried out without causing severe disruptions. Authorities are expected to announce a revised maintenance plan in the coming weeks.
