Security challenge: Governor Ododo’s example, by Nda Aaron

The Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Ododo, is setting a commendable example in prioritizing the security of lives and properties of Kogi residents. Unlike some other governors, Ododo isn’t passing the buck to the federal government or President Tinubu. Instead, he’s taking proactive steps to tackle insecurity in the state.
*Building on a Legacy of Security Excellence*
Governor Ododo’s efforts are a continuation of the legacy of his predecessor, former Governor Yahaya Bello, who won several security awards as the top-performing security governor in Nigeria between 2016 and 2023. Recently, Governor Ododo received a security award from the Nigeria Vigilante Service, further solidifying Kogi State’s reputation for security excellence.
*A Test of Resolve*
Barely four months into Governor Ododo’s administration, kidnappers struck at Confluence University of Science and Technology -Osara, in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting over 20 students. However, the Governor’s response was swift and resolute. He mobilized the Kogi State Vigilante Service (KSVS) in collaboration with other security agencies to rescue the students.
*No Room for Criminals*
The kidnappers demanded ransom and threatened to kill the students if their demands weren’t met. However, Governor Ododo remained resolute, stating, “No room for criminals and criminality in Kogi State under my watch.” He emphasized that the life of one student is equal to the lives of all the kidnappers. This decisive action led to the successful rescue of the students.
*A Turning Point*
This operation caught the attention of President Tinubu, who was impressed by Governor Ododo’s commitment to security. The operation also highlighted the crucial role of governors as chief security officers of their states in tackling insecurity nationwide. Consequently, the current Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, who was then the Kogi State Director of DSS, played a key role in the intelligence operation that led to the students’ rescue. His involvement likely contributed to his appointment as DG-DSS, a position he’s holding today.
*Conclusion*
We must commend the duo of former Governor Yahaya Bello and Governor Ahmed Ododo for providing a perfect example and pathway for Nigeria’s security agencies in tackling insecurity. Their commitment to security has set a high standard for other governors to follow.
