NFF President visits injured Taiwo Awoniyi

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has paid a solidarity visit to Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi at his home in Nottingham, United Kingdom, following the player’s recent injury setback.
Gusau, who was accompanied by members of the NFF Executive Board, visited the Nottingham Forest forward on Thursday, May 29, 2025, to check on his recovery progress and offer moral support after the striker underwent surgery for an injury sustained during a Premier League match.
During the visit, Gusau expressed joy at seeing Awoniyi in good spirits and responding well to treatment. He described the striker as an “indispensable asset” to both the national team and his English club side, Nottingham Forest.
“As a key player for Nigeria, your wellbeing is very important to us,” Gusau said. “We are happy to see you recovering well. We pray for your quick and complete healing, and we’ll keep supporting you throughout this journey back to full fitness.”
The NFF boss, who also serves as the newly elected President of the West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU B), reassured Awoniyi that the football federation will remain closely involved in his recovery process.
In response, Awoniyi thanked Gusau and his delegation for the visit, which he described as uplifting. He noted that his rehabilitation was progressing steadily under expert medical supervision, and he expressed optimism about returning to action stronger than ever.
“I’m grateful for the love and support from the NFF and everyone back home. I’m focused on my recovery and doing everything to come back better,” Awoniyi said.
The striker sustained his injury earlier this season during a Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City. In a determined attempt to score, Awoniyi collided with the goalpost — an impact that later required surgical intervention. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Awoniyi’s visit by top football officials underscores the NFF’s commitment to the welfare of national team players, both on and off the pitch.
