Tragedy as popular Oyo traditional ruler passes away

The Oniroko of Iroko, His Royal Highness Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), has passed away, marking the end of a revered reign in Oyo State’s traditional institution.
The monarch, who ruled over Iroko in Akinyele Local Government Area, reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.
His death was confirmed in an official statement issued by Prince Dolapo Abioye on behalf of the Opeola-Oniroko family.
“It is with a deep sense of sorrow and profound respect that I write to formally announce the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), the Oniroko of Iroko,” the statement read.
According to the family, the late Oba will be laid to rest on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with further details of the funeral rites to be announced in due course.
During his reign, Oba Opeola was widely regarded as a beacon of unity, culture, and progress. He was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the development of Iroko and the preservation of Yoruba traditions.
“His Royal Highness was a symbol of unity, tradition, and progress. He devoted his life to the service of his people, the preservation of our customs, and the pursuit of development in Iroko, Akinyele Local Government, and Oyo State in general,” Prince Abioye added.
The passing of Oba Opeola has left a significant void in the Iroko community, where he was deeply respected and loved.
