Opposition will unseat Tinubu in 2027 – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation and Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that Nigeria’s opposition has the power to remove President Bola Tinubu from office, pointing to the rising hunger and growing public dissatisfaction across the country.
Amaechi made the remarks on Saturday during his 60th birthday celebration in Abuja, where he openly addressed the challenges facing the nation and reflected on the potential strength of a united opposition.
“We are all hungry. All of us are. If you are not hungry, I am,” Amaechi stated bluntly. “So, for us the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power (Tinubu), we can remove him from this power.”
Reflecting on his early days as a student activist, Amaechi recounted his role in organizing nationwide protests against former military leaders Ibrahim Babangida and Muhammadu Buhari, stressing how Nigerian students once stood together regardless of ethnic background.
“As students, we organized the Tai Solarin protest against Babangida and we also organized protests against Buhari. Back then, there was no North and South among us,” Amaechi recalled.
He detailed how student leaders coordinated protest actions across major universities, holding strategic meetings in Kano and staging simultaneous demonstrations at institutions like Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), and University of Lagos (UNILAG).
“You would see young, handsome Northerners and Southerners eating together, feeling free with one another,” he said wistfully.
“But today, we have poisoned the minds of our young men. They can’t even liberate themselves we were able to liberate ourselves,” Amaechi lamented, expressing concern over the current state of political division among Nigerian youth.
The former governor’s remarks have stirred conversations among political observers, with many watching closely to see whether Nigeria’s opposition will capitalize on public frustrations to challenge the Tinubu administration.
