Rivers crisis: Tinubu steps in, meets Fubara, Wike, lawmakers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night held a high-level meeting with key political actors from Rivers State in a fresh attempt to end the lingering crisis rocking the state’s leadership.
At the centre of the meeting, held behind closed doors in Abuja, were Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and members of the state assembly.
Although, no official statement has been released, there’s indication that the meeting may be one of President Tinubu’s efforts to reconcile the governor and the state lawmakers, whose rift had threatened governance in the oil-rich state that lead to the declaration of state of emergency earlier in the year.
Recalled that Tensions had escalated in Rivers after Governor Fubara fell out with his predecessor and political benefactor, Wike, a development that saw the House of Assembly, led by Amaewhule, attempt to impeach the governor on two occasions.
Although, no official statement has been issued confirming a formal resolution as at the time of compiling this report.
The political turmoil, which began shortly after Fubara assumed office, had led to a major division in the state assembly, with court cases deepening the rift. Several commissioners loyal to Wike had also resigned from Fubara’s cabinet during the height of the crisis.
Thursday’s meeting is the latest in a series of presidential interventions, as Tinubu continues to push for stability in Rivers, one of the country’s most economically strategic states.
