BASIEC fixes May 24 for Shira LG by-election

Preparations have been concluded by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) for the conduct of by-election in Shira Local Government Council of the state on May 24 this year.
The election would be held for the office of the chairman and his deputy, sequel to the impeachment of the former executives over alleged maladministration.
The Chairman of the commission, Ahmad Makama who disclosed this at a news conference on Thursday in Bauchi said the commission had concluded preparations for the by-election including the training of ad-hoc staff and logistic arrangements.
According to him, “We are committed to conducting free and fair election that reflect the will of the people, We urge all stakeholders to support us in this endeavor. Voter safety and freedom are paramount.
“We appeal to security agencies to provide adequate security coverage during the by-election to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” he said.
Makama advised political parties to adhere to the electoral guidelines, stressing that they are expected to abide by the code of conduct and ensure their supporters do not engage in violence or intimidation.
He further assured the electorate of the commission’s readiness to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, stressing that, “We are determined to ensure that the outcome of the by-election reflects the true will of the people” .
The BASIEC chairman then urged community leaders and civil society organisations to collaborate with the commission to ensure a hitch free exercise, pointing out that
“We need the support of all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible election.” END
