Benue LG boss, Oche hails court victory, calls for unity in Ado LGA

In a landmark judgment delivered by the Benue State Appeal Tribunal, Sunny Oche has been declared the duly elected Chairman of Ado Local Government Area, effectively resolving the leadership tussle that followed the October 5, 2024 council elections conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission.
The appellate court’s decision overturned the earlier ruling of the lower tribunal which had dismissed Hon. Oche’s victory.
The court upheld that the election was properly conducted and that Oche was rightfully elected by the people of Ado LGA.
The judgment was met with widespread jubilation among his supporters, who hailed it as a victory for truth, justice, and the triumph of the people’s will.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Oche described the judgment as a resounding win for democracy, the people of Ado, and the rule of law.
“First, we dedicate this victory to God Almighty who made it possible, and to the people of Ado, especially those who have long been deprived of purposeful leadership,” he said. “This is for the forsaken, the ordinary people who stood under the sun and rain praying for justice. Their voices have now been heard.”
He referred to the ruling as a “tripartite victory”for the people who voted, for the democratic process, and for those who challenged the injustice at the tribunal. According to him, the judgment underscores the fact that electoral mandates must not be taken for granted.
However, he criticized the lower tribunal for its “lackadaisical approach” to justice.
“The panel lacked the depth and diligence required for such a sensitive case. They ignored well-established judicial precedents and misinterpreted key provisions of the Benue State Electoral Act. Their ruling was not only flawed but dangerous to our democratic development,” he added.
The politician commended the justices of the Court of Appeal for their thorough review of the case, asserting that their decision has significantly strengthened Nigeria’s electoral jurisprudence.
He also issued a stern warning against any further attempts to undermine his mandate:
“This judgment settles the matter once and for all. There will be no tolerance for any attempts by unauthorized persons to claim the office of chairman or local government executive. Any such actions will face the full weight of the law. Impersonation carries serious legal consequences, and the relevant authorities will enforce the law rigorously.”
While calling for unity and collaboration, Oche urged all stakeholders to accept the verdict in good faith and support his administration in delivering meaningful and purposeful development to the people of Ado LGA.
“It’s time to set politics aside and focus on progress. The people have waited long enough for genuine leadership, and now that leadership has been affirmed. Let’s get to work.”
In a statesmanlike appeal, Hon. Oche called on all Benue indigenes to join hands with the Executive Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, in the ongoing battle against the ravaging insecurity that has plagued the state.
“We must unite under the purposeful and visionary leadership of His Excellency, Fr Hyacinth Alia. The governor, in his magnanimity, is doing everything possible to ensure a safe and secure Benue for all. Security is not the job of government alone; it requires collective vigilance, cooperation, and unwavering support,” he said.
He also acknowledged the tireless role played by the APC State Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Omale, for his steadfast commitment to truth and fairness.
“I want to sincerely commend Dr. Omale for ensuring that justice prevailed. His principled leadership and firm stance on party unity and democratic integrity remain a beacon for us all.”
This historic ruling is expected to usher in a period of political stability in Ado Local Government Area and reinforces the critical role of the judiciary in upholding the will of the people and democratic principles across Benue State.
