Breaking: CAF reacts to Super eagles’ airport ordeal in Libya

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released an official statement regarding the delay and abandonment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya.

The Nigerian national team and officials were left stranded for over 15 hours without access to food, water, or internet, leading to the postponement of their scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya.

After finally departing the North African country, the Super Eagles will not participate in the AFCON qualifier initially set for Tuesday, October 15.

CAF, expressing concern over the situation, has now referred the incident to its Disciplinary Board for a full investigation. In their statement, CAF emphasized that they had been in touch with both Libyan and Nigerian authorities following reports of the team’s distressing conditions at the airport. The Nigerian delegation was allegedly forced to land at the makeshift airport under the instruction of Libyan authorities.

The official CAF statement reads:

“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.

“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”

CAF’s Disciplinary Board is expected to thoroughly investigate the incident and take action against any parties found to have breached the federation’s regulations.
