Breaking: Crisis hits Cross River Assembly as members impeach speaker

Lawmakers in the Cross River House of Assembly have impeached the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ekom Ayambem, from office.
Lawmaker representing Calabar South 1 Constituency, Hon. Effiom Ekarika had moved a motion to impeach the speaker which was seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang of Bekwarra State Constituency.
This decisive action marks a notable shift in the Assembly’s leadership dynamics.
Ayambem had been serving as the Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly since his election to the position in June 2023.
Representing the Ikom 2 State Constituency, his tenure, although brief, was marked by various legislative activities and efforts.
The reasons behind the impeachment and the implications for the future of the House’s legislative agenda remain to be fully clarified.
However, this event underscores the ever-changing nature of political alliances and the governance landscape in Cross River State.
