Ex-Eagles star dies in auto crash


Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning over the death of former Stationery Stores FC star, Ibrahim Babangida, in an automobile crash Thursday.
The elder Tijani Babangida who played for the Super Eagles as well as Ajax Amsterdam was also involved in the accident along with his wife, son and maid. Tijani escaped unhurt in the crash. Only his younger brother Ibrahim died in the accident while the rest are in critical situations in hospital in Kaduna.
In a statement issued by Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) headed by Tijani Babangida, the entire household was travelling on the Kaduna-Zaria highway Thursday, when the fatal accident occurred.
According to General Secretary of PFAN, Emmanuel Babayaro, “the Babangida family that included Tijani, his wife, son, maid and Ibrahim, were travelling on the Kaduna-Zaria highway yesterday, when the fatal accident occurred.”
Babayaro, while expressing deep regrets and sorrow on behalf of the players union, remarked that the association would issue further statement on its plan towards supporting the bereaved family.
Ibrahim, who won the 1993 FIFA U17 World Cup alongside the likes of Celestine Babayaro, Nwankwo Kanu and Wilson Oruma, will be buried according to Muslim rites in Kaduna today, Friday, May 10,2024.
