Family demands justice after Man Utd fan allegedly kills Arsenal supporter

The burial of 36-year-old identified as Benjamin Ndyamuhaki, a Manchester United fan, took place on Wednesday, October 30, at Kabungo Cell, Katenga Parish, Kaharo Sub County, Kabale District.

Ndyamuhaki, reportedly the victim of a fatal altercation with an Arsenal fan, was mourned by family and friends who gathered to bid farewell to the fifth of eleven siblings.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, at Kyobugombe Trading Center after a heated exchange in a video room.

The altercation reportedly erupted following a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool in an English Premier League match.

According to eyewitnesses, tensions flared when Liverpool scored a late equalizer, prompting Ndyamuhaki to celebrate.

His celebration, which included throwing popcorn, allegedly provoked Arsenal supporter Onan Byampangi, who subsequently struck Ndyamuhaki with a stick, resulting in severe injuries.

“I was informed on Monday morning that two men fought each other on Sunday evening and one was taken to Bukinda Health Center before being transferred to Rugarama where he died. We are actively searching for the suspect, who was last seen in Ntungamo,” said Mr. Edmond Tumwesigye, Chairman of LCIII of Kaharo Sub County, while addressing mourners.

At the funeral, Mr. Kenneth Atukwase, Ndyamuhaki’s elder brother, remembered him as a beloved and diligent family member.

“Our brother loved us very much and worked hard for our family. We are heartbroken by his untimely passing. May he rest in peace,” he shared.

Another family member, Mr. Barnard Tumuhimbise, urged the family to avoid retaliation, saying, “Our son did nothing to deserve this; God has already decided about his life. Children, do not seek revenge, for it is God who will take it on our behalf.”

Mr. Dan Kasaku, chairman of the Rukiga Taxi Drivers Association, highlighted Ndyamuhaki’s reputation as a “humble, trustworthy and hardworking” individual.

“Benyi was known for his cooperation, truthfulness, and humility. We have truly lost a good man,” he expressed.

Rev. Michael Asiimwe, pastor of Rwesasi Church, advised mourners and football enthusiasts to manage their emotions, particularly during tense matches. “I love football, but because I struggle with anger, I avoid video rooms for games. If you know you can’t control your anger, stay away. Find ways to cope instead of resorting to violence,” he advised.

Kigezi Regional Coordinator of the Alliance for National Transition (ANT), Mr. Bonny Tumuranze, also emphasized the need for restraint and collaboration with authorities. “We are working with the police to ensure that the suspect is arrested and brought to justice,” he said.

Kabale District Police Commander (DPC), Mr. Joseph Bakaleke, confirmed that a manhunt is underway to locate Byampangi, who remains at large.
