FG fires back at Sanusi over economic reforms criticism

The Federal Government has responded to remarks by the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning its economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Sanusi, speaking at the 21st Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Lagos, had declared that he would no longer offer insights into Nigeria’s economic direction, stating he did not want to “help this government.” He criticized the lack of credible voices within the administration to explain its policies and reforms to Nigerians.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation expressed disappointment at Sanusi’s stance, describing it as driven by personal grievances rather than national interest.
The statement, signed by Minister Mohammed Idris, highlighted the critical juncture at which Nigeria finds itself and emphasized that bold economic reforms, though painful, are essential for long-term stability.
“It is deeply disappointing that reforms widely recognized as essential by global experts—including by Emir Sanusi himself—are now being subtly condemned because of a shift in loyalty,” the statement read.
The ministry noted that policies such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies have already yielded positive outcomes, including increased investor confidence, strengthened foreign reserves, and better fiscal management.
The government urged Sanusi to rise above personal biases and partisan undertones, calling on him to join in collaborative efforts to rebuild Nigeria.
“Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. Leaders must refrain from rhetoric that undermines public trust and instead champion the collective goal of prosperity for all Nigerians,” the statement added.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with constructive critics while remaining focused on fostering economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity. It called on all citizens and leaders to prioritize the nation’s progress over personal gain.
With President Tinubu’s government committed to delivering renewed hope, the statement concluded by urging Nigerians to remember this period as a pivotal moment where unity and collaboration secured a brighter future.
