After months of political drama and deepening tensions in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have finally put their differences aside.

Both leaders declared an end to their prolonged rift on Thursday night following a crucial meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The peace meeting, which also had other stakeholders in attendance, appears to have brought long awaited calm to the state’s turbulent political scene.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door session, Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, expressed joy over the reconciliation.

“I want to give God the glory that today, the 26th of June 2025, peace has finally returned to the state,” Wike said. “We all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work with all of us. We are members of the same political family.”

He admitted that political disagreements were inevitable but stressed that what matters most is the ability to resolve them and move on.

“Just like humans, you have disagreements, and then you have a time to also settle your disagreements. That has been concluded today, and we have come to report to Mr President. So, for me, everything is over,” he said.

Governor Fubara, on his part, said the peace deal was a welcome development and expressed commitment to ensuring it lasts.

“For me, it’s very important that this day has come. What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, with the help of Mr President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, peace has returned to Rivers State,” the governor said.

He assured residents that his administration would do everything possible to sustain the peace and continue with the development agenda for the state.
