The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full-scale investigation into a viral video showing a retired Superintendent of Police expressing frustration over his retirement benefits.

Few days ago, we reported a story of retired officer who claimed to have served the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years and was offered just ₦2 million as his terminal benefit after decades of service. He disclosed that the Police Pension Board recently communicated to him that a total of ₦3 million had been approved: ₦1 million for arrears from October 2023 to date, and ₦2 million as his full retirement package.

Rejecting the amount, the visibly disappointed retiree lamented what he described as a “shameful” payout that fails to reflect his commitment and sacrifice.

Reacting to the claims on Thursday, the Force Headquarters in Abuja issued a statement through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to the statement, the IGP has instructed the Nigeria Police Force Pensions Limited to investigate the claims thoroughly, identify any administrative lapses, and take necessary action to address the concerns raised by the retired officer.

“The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its pensioners, many of whom dedicated their lives to the service and safety of our nation,” the statement read in part.

It added that the IGP considers the welfare of both serving and retired personnel a top priority, stressing that proper pension management is essential for maintaining morale and institutional credibility.

While acknowledging that significant strides have been made in improving the police pension structure, the IGP emphasized the value of feedback in driving reform.

The Force reassured retirees and the public that it would act swiftly to ensure fairness and transparency in the system.
