Dorcas Agabison, the PhD student of the department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), who was reportedly kidnapped while jogging on campus, has regained her freedom.

Her release was confirmed on Sunday evening, June 22, 2025, in a message circulated by the Public Relations Officer of the university’s Odili Postgraduate Hall, Joy Adikpe.

“We are relieved to announce that Ms. Dorcas Agabison… has been safely released. We thank God for her safe return, unhurt and sound,” the statement read in part.

The announcement comes just a day after news of her abduction went viral, both within and outside the university community. The postgraduate student was said to have been taken while on her routine morning exercise, prompting fears over security lapses within the campus.

Following her release, the university authorities reiterated their earlier warning urging students especially female students to be vigilant, particularly during early morning or late evening hours.

The student who first raised the alarm about the abduction via social media also confirmed her release in an update under the initial post, expressing gratitude for the support received during the ordeal.

The circumstances surrounding her release remain unclear, and there has been no official comment from the university’s management or security operatives regarding whether a ransom was paid or arrests were made.

Meanwhile, the news of Dorcas’s safe return has created relief among students and staff of the institution, many of whom had spent the weekend praying and calling for her rescue.
