A defining moment is upon us – the one that will define the trajectory of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration and the future of Edo state.
The people are patiently waiting, with high expectations to see those that would emerge as commissioners – in terms of competence, capacity, integrity and vision over political patronage. Although we already know some; those handling Justice, Health, Finance among other non-cabinet roles in agencies, parastatals, commissions and boards.
From the past administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki to the two-month-old government of Senator Okpebholo, it is glaring that appointments would no longer be doled out like a father sharing “akara” to his children. In the past, it was handed out to every Tom, Dick and Harry without consideration for merit. I am told that things would be done differently under the watch of the new Sherrif.
It seems to me that the governor’s vision would likely tend towards a lean, and efficient government that would deliver the results. Certainly, everyone cannot be in government and as such, I have advised those that are willing to listen, to consider farming which is also an integral part of the governor’s vision – food sustainability. Party leaders and supporters must begin to think towards this direction and ease the unnecessary pressure on the governor for appointments.
While key appointments like the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Finance and Commissioner for Health have been announced, much of the cabinet is yet to be formed. And so, while the governor is carefully selecting and headhunting individuals who can add value to his administration, we the citizens hope that when they finally emerge, they would consider the interest of the state over and above their personal interests.
One of the potential cabinet member to watch out for is Hon. Paul Ohonbamu. Also known as “Equity”, he is a name that cannot be overlooked. He is from Egor local government area.
Known for his eloquence and measured approach to political discourse, he frequently draws from Shakespeare to drive home his points and to explain complex political issues. His maturity, courtesy, and understanding make him a strong candidate for Okpebholo’s cabinet. Ohonbamu is not just a loyal party man but also one of the few who first championed the Okpebholo candidacy before the primaries. His inclusion in the cabinet would bring both intellectual depth and political experience to the administration.
A well-documented supoorter with an unwavering and dedicated commitment in the Okpebholo project is Dr. Blessing Agbomere. A lawyer, journalist, author, and bridge between generations, Agbomere’s contributions during the campaign cannot go unnoticed. From organising events to risking his resources, he went above and beyond to ensure the governor’s success. His creativity, energy, and ability to connect with the younger generation make him an invaluable asset. He is a dynamic personality. His inclusion into the Okpebholo’s cabinet will surely come with a lot of innovation, style and quality. Agbomere is a result-oriented person.
There’s is a former Commissioner for Education who served during the Adams Oshiomhole administration and a staunch party loyalist that is expected to make the list. He is Dr. Washington Osifo. He was one of the arrow-head of the 14 members of the House of Assembly that was denied inauguration during the Obaseki administration.
Osifo’s resilience and commitment to the party’s ideals should secure him a seat, as a strong candidate. As a lawyer and Ph.D. holder, he brings intellectual heft and a wealth of experience that would serve the administration in no small measure. His consideration and nomination would have brought respite to the injustice done him and his colleagues.
The former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Sabo Tiger Edoror is another figure deserving of recognition. Edoror fought a good fight. And he fought tirelessly. During the crisis that denied him and others their legislative mandates, he continued his efforts through the primaries that brought in Okpebholo and stood with him during the elections. His political acumen, accessibility, and the experience make him a natural choice for a cabinet position. He deserves it, he is worthy of a seat in the cabinet.
There is a former Senior Special Assistant under Governor Adams Oshiomhole, that’s a meticulous fellow we should look out for. He is Mr. Theophilus Afuda. This young and unassuming personality is known for his high level of commitment and composure.
Afuda’s past roles in the government and in electioneering campaigns exposed his ability to deliver results. His calm outlook and problem-solving skills would be a valuable addition to the cabinet, if he makes the list.
In all honesty, I must confess that the stakes for this cabinet are high and any lucky appointee must dare to be different. This is no time for any red carpet treatment and excessive perks of office. The people of Edo state demand commissioners who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work from day one just as the governor has done.
The governor has an opportunity to assemble a team of technocrats, intellectuals, seasoned politicians, and professionals who will bring competence and integrity into governance. Let me add that the sprinkling of youths and women in the cabinet will further tell of the governor’s commitment to inclusive governance.
The people of Edo state deserve no less. This is the time to build a legacy of progress, prosperity, and unity. For Governor Okpebholo and his cabinet, history beckons.
