Meghan Markle embraces Nigerian heritage, says this is ‘my country’


The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has revealed her connection to Nigeria during a visit with Prince Harry to the West African country.
She referred to Nigeria as “my country” and expressed her gratitude to Nigerians for their warm welcome.
Meghan shared that a recent DNA test disclosed her Nigerian ancestry, showing she is “43 per cent Nigerian.”
Speaking at a programme organised by women in leadership, co-hosted by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Head of the World Trade Organization, Meghan expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended to her and Prince Harry.
She revealed her newfound Nigerian heritage and discussed how it has deepened her understanding of the country.
Meghan arrived at the summit slightly behind schedule and acknowledged the audience’s graciousness.
She recounted calling her mother upon learning about her Nigerian roots, seeking to understand more about her heritage.
Reflecting on her visit, Meghan shared, “Never did I imagine I would comprehend Nigerian culture as deeply as I do now. The warmth and acceptance I’ve experienced have been overwhelming.”
She observed that many expressed little surprise upon learning about her Nigerian ancestry, a feeling that has stuck with her throughout her visit.
