Messi hails Lamine Yamal

Lionel Messi has spoken for nearly an hour about the most memorable moments of his illustrious career and gave his blessing to Lamine Yamal, whom many already see as his natural successor.
Lionel Messi opened up in a wide-ranging interview with Simplemente Futbol, reflecting on the most significant chapters of his career and offering personal insights following his move to the United States.
The Argentina star admitted he had hoped to return to Barcelona after his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, but ultimately prioritised his family’s well-being, choosing to join Inter Miami for a new experience in a growing league.
The football legend acknowledged that his footballing ability was largely innate, describing it as “a gift from God”. From a young age, Messi showed exceptional talent, but he also emphasised the effort and sacrifices he made to refine it.
His arrival at La Masia marked a turning point, allowing him to learn aspects of the game he had not encountered in Argentina, especially under the guidance of Frank Rijkaard and later Pep Guardiola, whom he called “a phenomenon”.
Messi was also full of praise for Spain and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who has drawn comparisons to the World Cup winner. “He’s incredible. He’s already been a European champion with Spain. He’s just 17, so he’s still growing, but he’ll keep improving and adding to his game,” Messi said.
“Right now, he’s one of the best in the world.” He noted similarities in their development, both having started on the right wing, and expressed confidence in Yamal’s trajectory.
Finally, Messi shared his memories of Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign, emphasising the mental strength required after the opening loss to Saudi Arabia. He described the pressure of the match against Mexico as the tournament’s most emotionally intense moment and recounted the surreal nature of the final against France.
