Netizens react as Labour Party lawmaker wears Tinubu’s signature cap

Netizens have reacted on social media over a photo of Thaddeus Attah, the Labour Party representative for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos State, wearing a cap bearing the signature of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Attah shared the image over the weekend, and it quickly went viral, prompting a flurry of reactions, with many questioning his political allegiance.

Attah, who won his seat in the 2023 general elections—a victory largely attributed to the popularity of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi—was seen in the photograph wearing a cap emblazoned with the message, “THE TASK OF GOOD GOVERNANCE HAS BEGUN.”

The caption beneath it identified Attah as the Honourable Member representing Eti-Osa.

The timing of the photo has raised eyebrows, particularly given Attah’s association with Obi’s presidential campaign, where Obi managed to defeat President Tinubu in Lagos, a key battleground in the election.

Some Nigerians on social media were quick to express their concerns. One user, Prince Saviour, expressed frustration, tweeting: “Opposition Otilo ooh. Our Lagos Labour Party House of Representatives Member putting on Tinubu cap… What pains most is the sacrifices made to elect these guys.”

Another user, tweeting as @JustKingss, added: “Nobody elected him bro, nobody even knew him. The thing is everyone was voting LP from top to bottom so he was lucky that Peter Obi grace got him elected.”

Speculation that Attah might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was also rampant. A comment from user A. Adedotun (@Sen_Adedotun) warned, “Politics is about personal interest. Don’t be surprised he will decamp to APC before 2027.”

Despite the growing controversy, Attah has not officially stated about leaving the Labour Party.

In response to the increasing chatter, a representative for Attah insisted he had no intention of switching parties.

The spokesperson clarified, “He is not planning to decamp. He is a citizen of Nigeria under Tinubu. So, I don’t think the cap is limited to only APC members. He is not planning to decamp. He is one hundred per cent in LP.”

Attah’s photo comes months after another Labour Party politician, Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, defected to the APC in July.

Onyewuchi’s defection was formalised when his letter was read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, further fueling concerns about defections within the party.
