Nigeria aims to break world record for breastfeeding

Taraba State has joined other states in Nigeria in an effort to break the world record for the highest number of lactating mothers breastfeeding simultaneously. The goal is to have over 30,000 mothers breastfeeding their babies across all 36 states in Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.
This initiative was launched during World Breastfeeding Week, which took place from August 1-7. The event was held at the Catholic Cathedral Conference Hall in Jalingo, Taraba State, and was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials, health experts, and breastfeeding mothers.
According to Mohammed Kamfut, Chief Field Officer at UNICEF’s Bauchi office, the initiative aims not only to break a record but also to draw global attention to the importance of breastfeeding. Marcus Yau, representing UNICEF, emphasized that breastfeeding is an equalizer in society, offering every child the best start in life regardless of socio-economic status.
The importance of breastfeeding cannot be overstated, as it plays a critical role in infant survival, health, and well-being. The wife of the Governor, Mrs. Agyin Kefas, called on women in the state to support and practice exclusive breastfeeding to achieve better health outcomes for infants and children.
In her speech, Mrs. Kefas highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding milk, which is the only food and drink a baby need.
