Nigerian football community mourns as popular football star dies

The Nigerian football community is in mourning once again following the passing of former youth international Gift Atulewa, who died on Tuesday morning at the age of 38.
The prolific forward, known for his skillful play and powerful free kicks, reportedly succumbed to complications from high blood pressure.
Azuka Chiemeka, spokesperson for the Delta State Football Association, confirmed Atulewa’s death, revealing that he passed away around 7 a.m. after his condition deteriorated. Atulewa had been hospitalized for escalating blood pressure issues, compounded by malaria.
“We just buried his wife last month; that may have contributed to this development,” Chiemeka said, adding that Atulewa’s health worsened just days before he passed. “He had been managing his blood pressure, but the condition suddenly became critical. This morning, we lost him.”
Atulewa’s recent months were marked by his dedication to football and his community. He had been actively participating in an ex-international football tournament in Delta State, representing his home team from Uwei. Known for his striking ability, Atulewa opened the tournament with a memorable goal scored from one of his signature free kicks just three weeks ago. He also recently returned from Cote d’Ivoire, where he completed a coaching course, hoping to give back to the sport in a new capacity.
Atulewa’s career began with Bayelsa United F.C., after which he played for Ocean Boys F.C. and Warri Wolves F.C., where he made a lasting impact. He represented Nigeria as part of the U-20 team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands, showcasing his talents on the international stage.
Tragically, Atulewa is now the third member of Nigeria’s 2005 U-20 squad to pass away, following the earlier losses of teammates Olufemi Adebayo and Isaac Promise. His death is another heartbreaking blow to Nigerian football, leaving a void among his peers and fans who admired his passion, talent, and contributions to the sport.
