Nollywood actor calls for govt support

Popular Nollywood Actor and film producer, Kunle Afolayan, has urged the government to provide greater support for the country’s film industry.
Afolayan made this appeal during a recent Zuma International Film Festival recently held in Abuja.
He stated, “I would like to encourage most of the filmmakers out there but I really think the government has to do a lot more. The industry is majorly run by individuals and the last time a grant was given to the industry was during the Goodluck Jonathan period for the Project Nollywood Act.”
Afolayan highlighted that while some individuals had taken it upon themselves to enhance the industry, they still required government assistance to address various challenges. “Some individuals have taken it upon themselves to build a film village. I built a film village in Oyo where we have 70 rooms of accommodation and different sets where people can visit from different parts of the world and there has never been a single support from the government even though I reached out a few times.
The Oyo State government donated a transformer and some poles but the community has not witnessed light in years. For three years, we have been running on generator which is not sustainable. That is why we can’t open fully. We are pleading to the government for some kind of support that will help us run and it will be beneficial to everybody.”
