Obaseki embarks on medical check-up amidst EFCC speculations

Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has embarked on a vacation for rest and medical evaluation following the conclusion of his tenure on November 11, 2024.
The announcement was made in a statement by his media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, on Wednesday.
“After completing his second term, Governor Obaseki has decided to take some time off for rest and a medical check-up,” Osagie said, adding that Obaseki extended his gratitude to God, the people of Edo, and the nation for the opportunity to serve. “He also urged Edo people, both at home and abroad, to continue to pray for the peace, progress, and prosperity of our state and Nigeria.”
In the final days of his administration, Obaseki granted clemency to 10 inmates in Edo correctional centers who had less than a year left on their sentences. On November 8, during an EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session in Abuja, he disclosed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly has plans to arrest him on charges of fraud after his term.
Obaseki, however, dismissed any fear of arrest, asserting that he has conducted himself with integrity. He attributed the alleged petitions against him to personal vendettas, emphasizing that he would even be willing to turn himself in if requested.
“I understand the EFCC might pick me up now that my tenure has ended. If they do, I’ll just spend the time researching,” Obaseki remarked. “Why should I be afraid? I focused on serving Edo and implementing necessary reforms, leaving behind legacy projects. If there’s a political witch-hunt, that’s beyond my control.”
The former governor maintained his confidence, insisting he has “nothing to hide” and that the impact of his administration will speak for itself. “People can continue with their unfounded claims; I’m here to face whatever comes my way,” he added.
Obaseki’s departure from office marks the start of the new administration under Governor Monday Okpebholo, who now takes the reins in Edo State.
