Outrage as WAEC exam held at night, days after Delta incident

Barely a week after students in Delta State were seen writing exams at night under torchlights, a similar incident has surfaced in Taraba State, creating renewed outrage over the deteriorating state of education infrastructure in Nigeria.

A viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) shows a dimly lit classroom where secondary school students in Taraba are writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) under near-total darkness. The footage, reportedly taken on the night of the examination, captures the students straining to complete their papers with minimal lighting, as no electricity was available.

The disturbing clip has created widespread condemnation from Nigerians online, who are demanding accountability from both state and federal authorities. Many see the video as yet another indictment of the systemic neglect plaguing the nation’s public education sector.

“This is happening again just days after the Delta case made headlines. How can students be expected to perform well in such conditions?” one user lamented.

The students’ determination to continue writing despite the difficult conditions has been described as both inspiring and heartbreaking. Many netizens hailed their resilience while calling on the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies to address the recurring lapses.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been released by the Taraba State Government or WAEC regarding the circumstances that led to the nighttime examination.

The back-to-back incidents have left many Nigerians questioning how many more schools across the country are silently suffering the same fate and whether any meaningful change will follow the growing outrage.
