PDP will bounce back despite defections — BoT chairman

Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has downplayed concerns over the recent defection of several high-profile party members to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the development as “a blessing in disguise.”
Speaking with a correspondent, Wabara said the defection of the PDP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; and other prominent chieftains would not weaken the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
While admitting that the party would “surely miss” the defectors, the former Senate President expressed confidence that their exit would ultimately lead to an internal crisis within the APC.
“The PDP will laugh last because very soon, there will be an implosion in the APC,” Wabara said. “Those joining the APC will soon attempt to displace the loyal members who have built the party over the years. When that happens, the displaced APC members will have no choice but to find their way back to the PDP.”
He noted that defection is a common occurrence in politics and attributed the wave of exits to various factors including the pursuit of second-term ambitions, loss of faith in the electoral process, and the need for political protection.
“It was expected, and I think we should expect more,” he stated. “Some are defecting to secure a second term, while others seek protection. But there’s nothing to worry about — it’s part of the political game.”
Despite the high-profile defections, Wabara maintained that the APC would not find it easy in the 2027 elections. He argued that Nigerians, who have endured economic hardship and bad governance under the APC, would vote wisely and ensure that their votes count.
“It’s a movement of leadership, not followership,” he said. “Even among the leaders, not all are moving to the APC. At the end of the day, it is Nigerians who will decide the 2027 presidential election, not political parties.”
The PDP BoT Chairman further stated that the lack of confidence in the electoral process is a major reason some politicians are gravitating toward the ruling party. However, he expressed hope that Nigerians would not allow their mandate to be stolen again.
“Those defecting fear that the 2027 election results may not reflect the true will of the people,” Wabara added. “But Nigerians have learned from the past and will not permit another broad-day robbery.”
