Protect the senate, not individuals

Former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of the Senate rather than individuals.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Saraki expressed deep concern over the public dispute, warning that it could negatively impact the image and perception of the legislative institution.

“I have watched from afar the recent development in the Senate between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. It is a development that has made me sad because of its overall negative effect on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution,” Saraki stated.

He urged both parties, as well as their supporters, to handle the matter with caution, ensuring that their actions and statements do not tarnish the Senate’s reputation. He stressed the importance of resolving the allegations in line with constitutional provisions, Senate rules, and parliamentary conventions.

Saraki recommended that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions conduct an open and transparent investigation into the matter. He insisted that both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan must cooperate fully with the committee, just as he did during his tenure as Senate President when he faced allegations over an official vehicle’s customs duty.

Recalling his experience, he said, “Since I knew the claim was false, the matter was referred to the Ethics Committee, and I appeared before the committee to testify, in the full glare of the media. From my testimony, it was clear the Senator who made the allegation got his facts wrong and was only being mischievous.”

Saraki stressed that the 10th Senate should adopt a similar approach to ensure fairness, adding that leadership must prioritize the credibility of the institution over personal interests.

He further warned against allowing the Senate to be viewed as an institution that tolerates sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, and disregard for standing orders. According to him, a thorough and unbiased investigation would clarify any wrongdoing and provide necessary corrections.

Clarifying his position, Saraki stated, “Let me make it clear without any ambiguity that I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything nor am I expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is right in her actions and claims. My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the integrity of the Senate.”

He concluded by urging all democratic stakeholders to work towards strengthening the Senate, ensuring that no leader or member undermines its sanctity.

With the controversy continuing to stir debates within and outside the National Assembly, all eyes are now on the Senate leadership to see whether Saraki’s call for a transparent probe will be heeded.
