The Federal Government of Nigeria has formalized a series of strategic agreements with India, aimed at bolstering collaboration in economic development, security, and energy infrastructure.

The agreements were unveiled during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nigeria, where he held high-level talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Economic and Trade Expansion
In a joint statement, both leaders reaffirmed India’s position as Nigeria’s largest trading partner and outlined steps to deepen bilateral trade. Key measures include finalizing the Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA), the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), and the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). These agreements are designed to attract investments and expand trade.

The commitment follows the $14 billion pledged by Indian investors during the Nigeria-India Business Conference in September. Targeted sectors include industrialization, telecommunications, and energy, promising transformative growth for both economies.

Enhanced Defence and Security Collaboration
The two nations also agreed to strengthen their partnership in counterterrorism, maritime security, and intelligence sharing. With piracy a persistent threat in the Gulf of Guinea, they pledged to conduct regular naval exercises and joint anti-piracy operations. Additionally, India committed to supporting Nigeria’s defence modernization efforts with advanced equipment and technology.

Energy Sector Partnerships
Energy cooperation emerged as a cornerstone of the discussions. India has committed to securing long-term contracts for crude oil and LNG supply from Nigeria. The country will also provide technical expertise for securing pipeline transmission, converting vehicles to CNG, and expanding LPG bottling and distribution systems.

Infrastructure and Development Commitments
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s support for Nigeria’s development priorities, pledging concessional Lines of Credit and technical expertise to boost infrastructure, agriculture, and other critical sectors.

Broader Areas of Cooperation
Other areas of collaboration include health, education, food security, and cultural exchanges. Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to counterterrorism within the UN framework, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and violent extremism.

This strengthened partnership reflects a mutual desire to drive sustainable development, promote regional stability, and create a framework for long-term economic growth. With these agreements in place, Nigeria and India are poised to elevate their bilateral relationship to new heights.
