Sanusi opens up on why he cannot support Tinubu govt

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has announced his decision to withdraw any form of advice or assistance to President Bola Tinubu’s administration concerning Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Speaking as the chairman of the 21st Memorial Lecture in honor of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi in Lagos on Wednesday, Sanusi expressed his disappointment with the current government of Tinubu, citing a lack of credible leadership and a disregard for sound governance practices.
“I can share insights about our current economic predicament and how it was both predictable and avoidable,” he said. “But I won’t. I have decided to remain silent on matters of the economy, reforms, and policies because explaining them would benefit this government. I don’t want to help this government. They are my friends, but if they don’t act like friends, I won’t either.”- Sanusi said.
Sanusi lamented what he described as the administration’s failure to engage competent individuals to communicate its policies effectively. “They don’t even have people with the pedigree to explain what they are doing. I started by offering help, but I will no longer do so. Let them explain to Nigerians why they are pursuing their current policies.”
The former Central Bank Governor also blamed decades of poor governance for Nigeria’s current economic woes. He emphasized that while the present struggles may be a necessary consequence of past mismanagement, not all actions being taken are appropriate. “We warned about this outcome years ago, but no one listened. Is everything being done correctly now? No. When I’m ready to talk about the economy, I will.”

He, however, concluded by calling on members of the legal profession to emulate the late Fawehinmi, praising him as a paragon of integrity and virtue—qualities he said are now rare in Nigeria’s legal community.
