Taskforce arrests 54 for illegal ticketing, extortion of truck drivers

The Lagos State Taskforce has apprehended 54 individuals for their alleged involvement in illegal ticketing and extortion of truck drivers and commercial vehicle operators across various parts of the state.

The arrests took place in key locations such as Isolo, Mushin, Apapa, Mile 2, and along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, it was revealed that the suspects had been operating a fraudulent system, targeting trucks loaded with goods. They reportedly imposed illegal fines on the drivers, causing significant delays in the movement of goods and creating disruptions in supply chains across the state.

CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, emphasized that the arrests are part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to crack down on such unlawful activities. “This illegal ticketing system has been in place for too long. We are determined to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in extorting truck drivers and commercial vehicle operators. These practices are not only illegal but detrimental to the state’s economy,” Akerele stated.

He further explained that the task force is committed to restoring law and order in Lagos and ensuring the smooth operation of businesses without the threat of extortion by touts and other illegal actors. “It is part of our statutory responsibility to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in the illegal issuance of fines and tickets within the metropolis. We will ensure that all culprits are brought to justice,” Akerele added.

The ongoing operation is part of a broader strategy by the Lagos State government to eliminate extortion and other illegal practices that hinder the free flow of goods and services. The task force urged residents and business owners to report any suspicious activities to the authorities, promising that further arrests would be made to curb the menace.

CSP Akerele concluded by confirming that the 54 arrested suspects would be charged in court immediately.
