Treat inmates with respect, NCoS acting CG tasks officers on right attitude

The acting Controller General, Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche has called on officers and men of the service to display the right attitude in the discharge of their duty especially towards inmates.
Speaking during a lecture for the officers on Thursday in Abuja with the theme “Character Overhaul and Attitudinal Change, Nwakuche stressed the importance of achieving desired productivity and enhancing the service’s reputation.
Nwakuche said that the call for attitude adjustment became necessary as the service had reaffirmed its commitment to holistic reforms in the NCoS, focusing on rehabilitation, reformation, and redemption.
He said that the vision of the service prioritised staff welfare, training and community engagement, ensuring effective service delivery and enhanced public safety.
“I have told you about the expectations of the President, Bola Tinubu and the Minster of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
“If we don’t change our attitude, we don’t overhaul our character, the workforce will be toxic and when an environment is toxic, nothing is progressive and everything will become redundant.
“We must prioritise mutual respect, empathy, and professionalism in our interactions with inmates. This will foster public trust and confidence in our ability to reform and rehabilitate,”he said.
Nwakuche pledged to create a conducive work environment, soliciting support from officers while urging officers to embrace the changes, striving for excellence in their duties.
The acting CG also urged officers to “revamp”their character and mindset saying that a character and attitude makeover was essential in all ramifications.
In his lecture, the resource person, Dr Joseph Danley, the National President of the Foundation for Correction of Moral Decadence, stressed patriotism and love as vital for national growth and development.
“Without patriotism, our collective progress is hindered.
“We must instill these values in our daily interactions, promoting a culture of excellence and integrity,” he said.
