VIDEO: “We will not resume untill we get alert”- SSANU, NASU insists

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have vowed to continue their indefinite strike until their four-month salary arrears are fully paid.
SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim, speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, stressed that the unions are not open to mere promises or meetings, but demand actual payment. “Every required procedure has been followed,” Ibrahim said. “The government can simply order this payment, and within 24 hours, we’ll consult with our principals to suspend the strike.”

The strike, which commenced on Monday, has brought public university activities nationwide to a standstill, with academic programs halted and facilities closed. This follows a seven-day warning strike in March over the same unpaid salaries.
The dispute traces back to 2022, when SSANU and NASU embarked on an eight-month strike demanding better welfare packages. This led to the then-administration of President Muhammadu Buhari implementing a ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy. In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved partial payment of withheld salaries for ASUU members, covering four out of the eight months.
However, SSANU and NASU claimed the government failed to keep its promises, prompting the current indefinite strike. Despite a Senate call for dialogue, Ibrahim emphasized that the unions’ mandate is clear: the strike will continue until they receive salary alerts.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Dandutse Mohammed, described the strike as unnecessary and urged the unions to prioritize dialogue to avoid further academic disruptions and hardships for students and staff.
