LASG cracks down on fuel station over environmental pollution

A petrol station at Fagba Bus Stop along Iju-Ishaga Road has been shut down by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office for illegally dumping wastewater onto the public road.
In a statement released on Monday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement.
A concerned citizen, @LanreEboda, took to social media platform X on Sunday to bring the issue at the petrol station to the attention of Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab.
“There’s a serious issue of carwash wastewater spilling onto the main road at Fagba, causing pollution, your immediate intervention is needed to prevent further environmental damage and ensure public safety. Please act promptly,” the user wrote.
Confirming that the government had swung into action on Monday, Wahab wrote, “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed off ENYO petrol station at Fagba Bus Stop along Iju-Ishaga Road for indiscriminate discharging wastewater onto the public road thereby causing degradation of the road which was recently rehabilitated by the state government.
“The petrol station which also operates a car wash on its premises has been in the habit of discharging wastewater from the carwash onto the Iju Ishaga road and the surroundings until the sealing off this morning, July 29, 2024.”
The agency issued a stern warning to individuals and businesses engaging in environmental pollution and degradation, urging them to cease such activities immediately or face severe sanctions and legal prosecution.
