The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has called for a holistic approach to improve road traffic safety in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr Yusuf Suberu, Squadron Leader, Vehicle Inspection Office(VIO) Mayors of the Federation made the call in a statement he issued on Saturday in Abuja.
Suberu said that a combination of enforcement, education, and engineering was necessary to reduce road crashes in FCT.
He, however, emphasised that there was a need for collaborative effort between stakeholders and other spirited individuals.
He also stressed the importance of data analysis to identify crash hotspots and develop targeted interventions.
“There is need for enforcement of traffic laws, regular vehicle inspections and public awareness campaigns as they were crucial to road safety.
“Although, enforcement alone cannot solve the problem. We also need to educate drivers and pedestrians on traffic rules and safety measures.
“The FCT can achieve significant reduction in road crashes by implementing these measures,”he said.
Suberu emphasised the need for improved road infrastructure, including road markings, signage, and lighting among others.
He, however, announced plans to collaborate with other road safety agencies to establish a unified traffic management system.
“We have increased inspections leading to a significant reduction in road crashes involving commercial vehicles but we are not resting our oars as we will do more to ensure that FCT was free of RTCs.
“The FCT deserves a world-class traffic management system. We will work towards achieving this goal,” Suberu said.
The VIO boss commended the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike for efforts at curbing Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in the territory.
He also applauded the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Malam Shehu Mohammed for innovative ideas that have been implemented in addressing road traffic crashes in the country.
He appealed to drivers and motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations and ensure sanity on the highways.
This, he said will complement the efforts of all road safety stakeholders across the 36 states and FCT.
