Niger gets approval for new varsity

The Federal Government has officially approved the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action in Mokwa, Niger State.
This makes the institution the 65th state university and the 277th university in Nigeria’s higher education system.
The approval was confirmed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in a letter addressed to Niger State Governor Umar Bago. The letter, dated October 2, 2024, followed the state government’s formal notification regarding the university’s creation.
The NUC praised the establishment of the institution, highlighting its focus on agriculture and climate action as critical to addressing regional and national developmental challenges. The commission assured its full support and guidance to ensure the sustainable operation of the new university, particularly in governance, funding, and academic excellence.
In a bid to ensure seamless integration, the NUC has also notified relevant agencies, including JAMB, TETFund, and NYSC, about the new addition to the Nigerian university system.
The commission’s letter read in part:
“Consequent upon the receipt of the Niger State Government’s letter dated 2nd October, 2024, notifying the National Universities Commission (NUC) of the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa, and the formal presentation of the Strategic documents, including the relevant gazetted University Law, Academic Brief, and Physical Master Plan, I write, on behalf of the National Universities Commission (NUC), to inform His Excellency, that with effect from Monday 2nd December, 2024, Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa, Niger State, has been recognised as the 65th State University and 277th University in the Nigerian University System.”
The university is expected to be a hub for academic excellence and innovation, with a primary focus on agricultural development and climate resilience, aligning with the nation’s economic and environmental goals.
