Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed an incident involving teenage sensation Lamine Yamal during a match against Porto last season.
While appearing on The Ranveer Show, Gundogan, who spent last season at Barcelona, was asked the weirdest thing he has experienced in the middle of a game.
Gundogan recalled, “Last season we played against Porto and we were leading 1-0, and everything was going well. In the second half, at the 60th minute, we suddenly started to suffer. I felt that the opposing team became much better as if they had an extra player.”
It wasn’t long before Gundogan discovered the reason for the team’s struggle.
“After 10 minutes, I found out that one of our players left the field and went to the bathroom! It was Lamine,” he revealed.
According to Gundogan, Yamal’s unexpected absence caused confusion on the pitch and among the technical staff.
“Lamine was an important player so the technical staff did not want to replace him immediately, so they were waiting for him to return.”
The unusual situation left Gundogan frustrated.
“When I found out, I said, ‘Guys, what’s going on? We’re playing with 10 men! Don’t you want to make a substitution?’” he said.
Ultimately, the coaching staff had no choice but to substitute Yamal after waiting too long for his return.
