IWD: NICOWA president urges Suleja inmates to embrace rehabilitation

The President of the Nigerian Correctional Service Officers Wives Association (NICOWA), Mrs. Victoria Nwakuche, has called on inmates at the Suleja Medium Custodial Centre to take full advantage of the reformation and rehabilitation programs available to them.
Mrs. Nwakuche made the appeal during a visit to the facility in commemoration of 2025 International Women’s Day.
Addressing the female inmates, Mrs. Nwakuche urged the inmates to use their time in incarceration for self-reflection, particularly in the spirit of Ramadan and lent, and to make positive changes that will help them reintegrate successfully into society upon their release.
As part of her visit, the wife of the acting Controller General donated essential supplies, including bags of rice, baby diapers, wipes, cartons of bar soap, packs of tissue paper, and souvenirs for the staff, in recognition of their dedication to inmate rehabilitation. She encouraged correctional officers to treat inmates with compassion, seeing them as their own sisters and children.
During a tour of the prison workshops, Mrs. Nwakuche commended the skills displayed by the inmates and personally purchased some of the handcrafted bags they produced. She also spent time with nursing mothers at the facility, offering them words of encouragement while carrying their babies.
The Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Mr. Olatubosun Ajibogun, expressed gratitude for Mrs. Nwakuche’s visit and her commitment to the welfare of inmates.
The Assistant Controller of Corrections in charge of the facility, Mr. Sule Ibrahim, described her as a compassionate leader and noted that she is the first NICOWA President to visit the Suleja Medium Custodial Centre.
The visit was marked by excitement among the inmates, who expressed appreciation and offered prayers for Mrs. Nwakuche’s kindness. The highlight of the event was the presentation of welfare packages to nursing mothers within the facility, towards ensuring better care for their babies.
