In the wake of the recent massacre in Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly burnt alive, Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the Take It Back Movement and former presidential candidate, has launched a faulted Nigerian Army chiefs.

The footage, set during a press conference, shows Sowore addressing a cluster of microphones, his words sharp and direct. “It’s only in Nigeria that somebody who has never fought a war before will become general of the army,” he states, his voice laced with frustration. He labels these officers as “businessmen generals,” accusing them of focusing on personal gain rather than national security. “They are all building estates in Abuja,” he adds, suggesting a diversion of resources and attention from critical duties.

Sowore’s critique extends to the broader security apparatus, calling for a fundamental shift in how agencies operate. “The second aspect is to get our security agencies to do what security agencies do,” he urges, emphasizing their role in combating criminality rather than perpetuating it. He questions the retention of tired and retired officials, noting, “You cannot have an IG, I know you guys love talking about it, the general police who is tired and retired. You keep him in office and expect your security to end.” His words highlight a perceived failure in leadership that exacerbates insecurity.

He contrasts the Nigerian military with international counterparts, arguing, “It’s only in Nigeria that somebody has never fought a war before will become general of the army, based on the number of traditional rulers he knows or the G.O. of his church.” This comparison, drawing on examples from Israel and the U.S., where generals typically have combat experience, amplifies his call for reform.

Sowore’s statements come at a critical juncture, following the Benue massacre, where the failure of security forces to protect civilians has been widely condemned.
