Workers stranded as NLC, TUC block Jos DisCo, NERC office

Members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Plateau State blocked the entrance to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company offices on Monday.

Also picketing the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) offices at the Gold and Base axis.

This move comes as a response to the recent hike in electricity tariffs across the nation.

Led by the State Chairman of NLC, Eugene Mangji, the union members voiced their dissatisfaction with the tariff increase and demanded its reversal.

They emphasized that the action was in compliance with the directive from their national secretariat to protest against the hike and compel the authorities to address the issue.

The ultimatum issued to NERC, dated May 3, 2024, by both NLC and TUC, expressed grave concerns over the significant increase in electricity tariffs from N65/kWh to N225/kWh. The unions condemned the decision, considering it morally reprehensible and a blatant disregard for the challenges faced by Nigerians.

The letter to NERC highlighted the statutory obligations of the commission to regulate electricity tariffs in the country and criticized its collaboration with electricity distribution and generating companies to implement the tariff hike.

The unions demanded an immediate reversal of the hike, cessation of discriminatory practices, and restoration of statutory regulations governing the electricity industry.

The unions stressed their dedication to defending the rights of Nigerian citizens against exploitation and injustice.

Failure to comply with the ultimatum, set for May 12, 2024, would result in swift and decisive action from the unions, including the occupation of NERC and distribution companies’ offices nationwide until their demands are met.
