In a significant move aimed at enhancing grassroots governance, the Abia State House of Assembly has passed an amendment extending the tenure of Local Government Executive Chairmen from two to four years.
This landmark decision is expected to allow local council leaders more time to plan, implement, and complete impactful, people-oriented projects across the state.
The amendment reflects the collaborative vision between the Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, and the Federal Government’s broader agenda of strengthening local governance structures.
Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, played a pivotal role in championing the amendment, with unanimous support from his colleagues.
Commenting on the change, proponents highlighted that the extended tenure would foster consistency and productivity in local government administration, shifting the focus from short-term gains to sustainable development.
This development marks a new chapter in Abia State’s governance framework, promising improved service delivery and long-term strategic planning at the grassroots level.
