The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, which led to the escape of 12 inmates in the early hours of Monday, March 24, 2024.

According to the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the incident occurred after inmates in one section of the facility tampered with padlocks, creating an opportunity to break free.

Upon receiving reports of the escape, the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, in collaboration with security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State, swiftly deployed personnel to restore order and launch a manhunt for the fugitives.

As of the time of this report, five of the 12 escapees have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining individuals.

In response to the security lapse, Nwakuche has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape. Additionally, the NCoS has initiated a security audit across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future breaches.

The agency has also urged members of the public to remain calm and assist law enforcement by providing any useful information that could lead to the recapture of the remaining escapees. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

Reassuring Nigerians, the NCoS emphasized that the safety of custodial centers remains a top priority. Measures are being reinforced to strengthen security across all facilities, ensuring that correctional centers effectively carry out their mandate of safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.

The Koton-Karfe custodial breach adds to concerns about prison security in Nigeria, with authorities under pressure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
