Tragedy struck on Saturday in Enugu when a petrol tanker explosion claimed at least 15 lives, including three children, along the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., sent shockwaves through the area, leaving widespread devastation in its wake. Witnesses reported that the explosion was triggered when a fuel-laden tanker lost balance while descending the hilly and busy expressway.
The initial blast was described as catastrophic, igniting another petrol tanker behind it and setting six additional vehicles ablaze. Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes of people desperately trying to flee the inferno, with many caught in the flames. Several victims were reportedly burnt beyond recognition.
Rescue efforts were significantly hindered by the intensity of the fire, making it nearly impossible for bystanders or emergency responders to access the scene immediately.
Speaking to reporters, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu, Franklin Agbakoba Onyekwere, confirmed the incident but noted that full details were still being collated.
