CUPP: June 12 legacy betrayed by corrupt, authoritarian politicians

As Nigeria marks the anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned what it calls a “shameful betrayal” of the ideals that inspired the nation’s democratic journey.
In a strongly worded press statement signed by Chief Peter Ameh, National Secretary of CUPP, the group lamented that “the spirit of June 12 is being suffocated by the very leaders entrusted to uphold it.”
“June 12 was a symbol of the people’s yearning for democracy, justice, and accountability,” said Ameh. “But today, that dream is being mocked by rampant corruption, political violence, and authoritarian power grabs.”
The CUPP drew attention to the 2023 general elections, which it said were marred by irregularities. “Election rigging and unresolved glitches have delegitimized the democratic process,” Ameh stated. “Up until now, INEC has failed to provide a full and transparent account of what happened.”
According to the CUPP, these failings have turned democracy into “a hollow ritual,” as public trust continues to erode. “Elected officials are increasingly seen as serving personal and elite interests, rather than the common good,” the statement read.
Citing what it described as a “glaring betrayal,” CUPP condemned the suspension of the Governor and House of Assembly members in Rivers State. “This is a dangerous slide toward autocracy,” warned Ameh. “It violates every democratic norm and spits on the memory of those who fought and died for June 12.”
The CUPP also raised alarm over the appointment of “partisan actors” to Nigeria’s electoral commission. “This is a deliberate attempt to compromise the independence of our electoral body and manipulate future elections,” said the group.
In a passionate appeal, Ameh stressed that “the legacy of June 12 must not be reduced to a symbolic date on the calendar.” He continued: “It should remind us of our collective resolve to build a Nigeria where the will of the people reigns supreme.”
Calling for immediate reform, CUPP demanded the following: “A full investigation into the 2023 election irregularities, an end to political violence and authoritarian practices, the reinstatement of democratic governance in Rivers State, and the removal of all partisan appointees from INEC.”
“The time has come for Nigerians to reclaim their democratic power,” said Chief Ameh. “We must hold our leaders accountable and demand a government that serves the people, not the powerful.”
He concluded with a call to action: “The struggle for June 12 continues. Let us reject corruption, violence, and impunity—and recommit to the democratic ideals that can truly transform Nigeria.”
