Kano approves N5bn to supply fertiliser

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved a N5 billion fertiliser procurement deal on Tuesday, underscoring the state’s commitment to transforming its agricultural sector and ensuring food sufficiency.
According to a statement released by Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesman, the approval for the N5 billion fertiliser procurement was made during the 15th State Executive Council meeting, which took place at the Government House on Tuesday.
Dawakin Tofa explained that the decision to procure fertiliser worth N5 billion is a deliberate move to fulfill Governor Yusuf’s campaign promise of supporting smallholder farmers in rural areas, leading to increased crop production in the 2024 rainy season.
“A substantial amount of N5,073,840,000 has been allocated by the Kano State Executive Council for the acquisition of fertiliser across the 44 local government areas of the state.
“Governor Abba Yusuf had previously purchased grains, worth billions of naira and distributed them to the vulnerable people in the state, to cushion the economic hardship faced by a significant number of people in the state.
“The fertiliser approved for purchase will complement those already produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company and would be made available to farmers at a subsidised price within the state,” the statement read.
It added that the governor also approved the sum of N1bn to improve the quality and access to healthcare services for all residents.
The approval also encompassed a sum of N165 million to acquire vital medications and welcome packages for newborns, in addition to providing free essential supplies for maternal, neonatal, and child health, as well as emergency services.
The statement revealed that the contract to complete the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Madobi has been re-awarded, with an investment of N57 million.
